Gomorrah/My Troubles Are As Nothing Compared To Yours - 030215

Well, I know I said I'd think about doing some vocals today. Well, I did think about it. Most of last night, in fact. I found looking myself for reasons (or excuses) not to sing today. And I found plenty of silly, trivial, moody reasons. But when I woke up this morning, I found the best reason of all - incipient manflu. So, no singing to day, just Lemsip...;-).

But I decided to use the time to do some work on lyrics and vocal nonsense. Over the last while I have been keeping notes of random phrases that have popped into my head, for use either as proper lyrics, or as words I can dub-up. In the latter category, I have material for six tracks, to which I will probably add material improvised while tracking. All good fun, no doubt...

But I also found time to write two sets of lyrics. And here they are...

I need to tidy out the arrangement for ...TROUBLES a bit, but nothing a bit of "editage" won't sort.

Real world intervenes tomorrow. Can't be having fun all the day, can I...?;-).

Unwinnable Caption Competition - 300115

Mixed/mastered the track in CE5/AA3. Again, a lot of the heavy lifting had been done in the dubbing-up process, so the mixing itself was pretty smooth. However, my itchy editing finger got busy and I made a few changes which I hope will have enhanced the track.

I also decided to mess around with the actual master, flipping the channels and other nonsense.

The track sounds big and beaty and I think you'll like it!

The weather early next week should be reasonably favourable, which is a good thing, as I plan to do some field recording on Monday or Tuesday, so I'll need to do some preparatory work for that. In the meantime, I'll be giving some thought to lyrics and other vocalisations.

It's not just a question of words...

According to my spreadsheet, I have 14 tracks that require "vocals". Some of these also need "lyrics", so I'm guessing that a few of these tracks are going to be "songs", while the rest of them will more appropriately be described as "instrumentals with singing". Or "talking". If you catch my drift...

In order to facilitate the lyric-writing/vocal-arranging process, I did rough mixes of the tracks in CE5. Over the next day or so, I'll convert the mixes to MP3s and transfer them on to my iPhone. I will then be able to "live with" the tracks for a while to see what emerges.

In the meantime, I have a few tracks that are ready to mix/master, so I'll do that towards the end of next week.

Great to have a plan, isn't it?

Everybody Calls Me Darren/The Book Of Passwords - 300114

Not feeling in great form today - still dealing with the bloody manflu (which actually turned out to be a chest infection) - I'm nearly out of the woods, but I'm still stepping on squirrel droppings...

I didn't really feel like tackling anything major today, so I had a bit of a think. I'd been planning to record a track called EVERYBODY CALLS ME DARREN for a long time, but I hadn't really worked out what I was going to do with it. Got a spot of inspiration over the last few days and decided that I was going to do a mad take on a barber shop quartet-style a cappella arrangement. In order to do this, I'll need some form of rhythm track and some guide tones. So I recorded a metronome track in CE5 using the Behringer Xenyx 1202 mixer. I also recorded some MIDI bass tones using HALion One Ocatve Synth Bass (hopefully you won't hear either of these on the finished track).

For some mad reason, the Roland Juno-D seemed to "miss" various notes while programming, so I resurrected my old Yamaha DX100 synth and programmed using that. No problems with "missed" notes.

The old reliable DX100 - only cost me a tenner back in the day...

I nearly have a set of lyrics for the track too, so I hope to finish those off in the next wee while.

Having some time to kill, I decided to mix/master THE BOOK OF PASSWORDS in CE5/AA3. First track of the album finished in January - remarkable!

More fun tomorrow (hopefully...).

Stiltwalker In The Wind/Gomorrah - 050114

Busy morning today.

Prepared a rough stereo mix of the work to date in CE5 and copied it on to my Tascam 2488. All ready for tracking bass tomorrow...

GOMORRAH

A new track, and not one that I'd planned to do at all, but the other day the following quatrain(?) came to me by way of inspiration...

As I said, I wasn't planning on doing this track at all, and I certainly hadn't intended writing lyrics at this stage of the process, but when inspiration comes, it comes and should be welcomed.

As it happens, I'm jotting down whatever useful phrases I come across these days for potential use as lyrics. Even the odd phrase that might appear from time to time, totally by accident, in these blogposts. This is not how I usually approach lyric writing - normally I just start with a blank page and an equally blank mind, but I would then come up with the lyrics to a song in one go. Then again, D(O)UB(T) isn't about songs as such...

I recorded a metronome track (75 bpm) in CE5 using the Behringer Xenyx 1202 and transferred it onto the Tascam 2488.

I plan to recycle a bass line that I'd used on my track The Survivalists' Guide To Hardwood Flooring...

...which featured on my 2008 album, RAW MESH.

(Sorry I couldn't imbed the track properly in this post. Bloody Reverbnation...)

I hadn't liked what I'd done with the bass line at the time, and so I plan to make amends this time out. I hope to track the new bass line on Wednesday.

That's enough to be going on with for the moment.
