D(O)UB(T) is (o)u(t) and ab(o)u(t) - 070913

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

So D(O)UB(T) has finally been unleashed on the world. And here it is in all its "sonic glory"...

The album is initially released via Bandcamp with a number of bonus tracks, full artwork and access to a free download (via Mediafire or Dropbox) of a full album mix.

I am currently uploading the album to CD Baby to facilitate release, within the next few days, via the usual major digital retailers. The CD Baby version will not have the bonus features, so if you really want those, ya gotsta go to Bandcamp, aiiii...?

In the meantime, if you want to hear streams of the full album mix, you can go to Soundcloud...

...or to Mixcloud...

...so you can't say you haven't got a choice, can ya?

I hope you get a chance to listen to the album. If you like what you hear, be sure to tell your friends. And let me know too...;-).

More news when I have it.

Release date and preparatory work - 040915

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

I can now confirm that D(O)UB(T) will be formally released on next Monday, 7 September.

The album will be initially released via my Bandcamp page. The Bandcamp version will have some exclusive bonus tracks and will also offer the purchaser the option of a separate (i.e. not via Bandcamp) download of a full album mix, with all relevant crossfades. The full album mix will be available to stream via Mixcloud also.

After the Bandcamp upload, I will be using CD Baby to distribute the album to a variety of digital retailers, including, principally, iTunes. The CD Baby version will be the basic version of the album. I have to say that, barring one issue which was my own fault, I have always found CD Baby very decent and quick to work with. The album should be available on iTunes within a day or two of uploading to CD Baby.

Once all that has been done, my promo work will start. I'll do the easy stuff first - Facebook and Twitter. Then comes the slog of contacting websites and blogs, via a contact list which I've built-up over the last few years. Truth to tell, those contacts have been next to useless for me in terms of getting attention/reviews/whatever, but I feel I owe it to the album to try and push it is as far as I can within the limits of my resources (i.e. zero resources). To that end, I have put together a press kit of the album, featuring high-resolution MP3s, graphics and pictures and a short one-page press release. This has been uploaded to Megafire and Dropbox.

I had to make a slight change to one of the graphics re. credits.  I also had to encode one or two tracks at 320 kbps (they were only at 192 kbps).

Speaking of graphics, in case you haven't seen the album cover anywhere else on the internet, here it is...

Just in case anyone gets offended by the use of Christian imagery on an album cover (there's no accounting for people's capacity to take offence), the Bandcamp version of the album will feature as a bonus an alternative album cover. I'm getting all Barney Bubbles/Do It Yourself on yo' ass...

The link to the Bandcamp page will go up on Monday, so be patient until then...;-).

Graphix nouveaux - 140815

Sponsored by "Recently Played".

Spent the morning designing the graphics for the album. I found a public domain image from Wikipedia Commons which really fit (fitted?) the bill for a variety of reasons and I think I have come up with a really striking design for the cover. It may not be to everyone's taste, and I am thinking of offering an alternative cover image with the download for those who might require it.

And in spite of all the pictures that I took over the last few days, I ended up only using one, from the first photoshoot. I have been using it as my Facebook profile pick for a day or two. No-one has died, that I am aware of...

So that's a big hurdle surmounted. I'm looking at a release date in early September, after I come back from vacation. And I have a busy few days over the weekend, so you won't be hearing from me for a little bit. Nothing to worry about - I'm sure I'll be enjoying myself. The company will be good anyway...;-).

Gomorrah/Tracklisting - 280615

Sponsored by "Neu!"

GOMORRAH

Graphics done for a prospective October release.

TRACKLISTING

Made an MP3 file of Version 3b in AA3 for review purposes. Can't wait to listen to it over the car stereo and the setup in my lounge. There may be a few tweaks to be done on a few tracks, but more in the way of EQ adjustments. I'm certainly not messing around with crossfades again...;-).

You Have My Heart Scalded - 270615

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Ran up graphics for the ...SCALDED EP, which I hope to release in early August.

The graphics have a certain stylistic similarity with those of ...FLY. 'Cos that's how I roll...;-).

Me & The Fly/I Choose Indecision/Iye/You Have My Heart Scalded - 010615

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Greetings from a spectacularly miserable (weatherwise) Bank Holiday Gulag. Here is the news...

ME & THE FLY

Released and getting some nice comments from some nice people. You can judge for yourself right now...

In other news, I had another one of my "windows" and did some work on other album tracks, to wit...

I CHOOSE INDECISION

Mixed and mastered in CE5/AA3. Sounded alright when I mixed, but then I left it for a while and played it back - meh. My choice of drum parts didn't help things, but I'm not sure if the track works as a dub in any event. Probably too much going on with it anyway.

My inclination is to drop the track from the album, but I'll work up two different tracklistings (one "with" and one "without") and see how I feel about the track closer to release date.

IYE

Mixed and mastered in CE5/AA3. Sounds fine to me, A keeper...;-).

YOU HAVE MY HEART SCALDED

After much consideration, I'm going to revert to the original mix, because that's how I roll.

More over the course of the week.

Me & The Fly - 260515

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

So, I've gone and committed to a date. The ME & THE FLY EP will be released on 1 June 2015. Full details are on the relevant Facebook event page - https://www.facebook.com/events/842222109192252/.

And here's the graphic for the EP. I rather like it...

Further information closer to the day.

A bit excited - haven't done "the launch thing" in a while...;-).

You Have My Heart Scalded/Me & The Fly - 240515

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

...SCALDED

One last tweak to the mix in CE5/AA3. Definitely using this mix...I hope...;-).

...FLY

Finally got down to designing the cover art. Had a bit of fun locating a suitable font, but eventually got one. I can highly recommend 1001freefonts.com if you're stuck for a font.

I also found a suitable image from Wikipedia. I know, "Creative Commons" and all that, but just because I used it in this instance doesn't mean I endorse it. You can't call me a hypocrite if I acknowledge it myself...;-).

I'm having a good old think about a suitable release date. Sometime within the next few weeks, that for sure.

Roadtrip for the next few days. See you later on in the week...

Tracklisting - 100515

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Even though I am not working off a complete set of mastered track as yet, I think I have the tracklisting for the album pretty much nailed for the moment. 19 tracks - over 80 minutes long - I know, I'm an insaniac...;-).

As was the case for HELLHOLE, I plan to create a full album mix for the album, to compensate for the fact that I cannot crossfade the tracks on Bandcamp. The full mix will be included as a bonus track on Bandcamp. This time out, I also intend to upload the full mix onto Mixcloud (and possibly Soundcloud) for streaming purposes.

In order to get my crossfades sorted "properly", my plan is to upload all the tracks as a multi-track session file in AA3 and then use metronome tracks, which I recorded today in CE5, to line the tracks up to the optimum effect. I've done this type of thing for previous releases, but only "by ear" (without the metronome tracks). This should make things so much easier - or not work at all...

I also have the tracklistings sorted for 3 EPs to promote the album. More will be revealed closer to the moment.

Big roadtrip planned for the next few days, so you probably won't hear from me until the weekend.

Phew, sez you...

Choking On Dry Bread (a.k.a. Flypaper)/Tracklisting/ You'll Never Miss Your Mother Till The Well Runs Dry - 080515

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Spent the morning tweaking the edits and dubs in CE5. And I was happy enough with that, when a window emerged in the afternoon to mix/master the track properly. Which I did, except of course I did a further significant amount of additional tweaking along the way. I now think I've got it sounding as good as I can get it. If you like dub, then I think you'll like this.

I've decided to retitle the track as FLYPAPER, since the track has nothing to do with either choking or dry bread, but also there is a large lump of vocals from ...FLY, so it makes sense to change the title. That's it - no further discussion - executive decision.

In other news, I started putting together an initial tracklisting in AA3. So far, I've got 19 tracks and the running time is around 77 minutes. I'm trying to sequence the tracks in trios of fast/slow/ambient, but I know that the last track has to be ...MOTHER, so that idea doesn't hold all the way through. I need to check that I have not added EP tracks and that I have enough spare ambient tracks to go on the EPs (there will be three, FYI). I'll have another look at this over the weekend.

Making progress, bai...

Choking On Dry Bread/Me & The Fly - 060515

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Thought I might have a window to do some mixing/mastering this week, but I have a house full of students studying for exams, so that put the kibosh on that...

Instead, I started work editing CHOKING..., which essentially is a radical dub of ...FLY. The track is being extensively re-worked and will pretty much start at the middle section of ...FLY and everything will radiate from there, if you know what I mean,

The Ric bass and Squier Strat parts are pretty much sorted and MIDI soft synth parts are pretty OK too, but I might look at that aspect of the track again. Since the student "situation" is continuing for the rest of the week, I'll do some work on this tomorrow and possibly Friday. I'll look to see what use I can make of the existing vocal parts. With a bit of luck, I'll be able to start dubbing-up tomorrow.

As CHOKING... is working off the ...FLY CE5 project file, and as all the levels have been set for the ...FLY mix, I should, in theory, be able to mix/master CHOKING... using the ...FLY levels without having to use monitors for mixing. I'll give that a go. If it works, it'll save me a good bit of time.

CHOKING...will feature on the album, while ...FLY will not. Just want to clarify that.

Mare Nostrum/Me & The Fly - 280415

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

Big Gulag-shaped window opened up for me today!

MARE...

Spent the morning editing/dubbing-up the track in CE5. Not fully convinced that it will make the final album - I think that will depend on how satisfied I am with mix. But it should at least feature on an EP - especially after all the time and effort I put into the bastid. Time will tell...

...FLY

Spent the afternoon mixing and mastering the track in CE5/AA3. Ended up with five different mixes and I had issues with all of them, but I reckon I got them sorted on the fifth mix. Nice, big, beaty track and the title track for the first EP!

Having spent all day in the Gulag, I will be glad to return to the real world for the rest of the week, if only to give me ears a rest!

See yah when I see yah...

Gomorrah/Mare Nostrum/FCA Boots/Tropes and Memes/Everybody Calls Me Darren - 240415

Sponsored by "Music (random)".

GOMORRAH

Edited/dubbed-up the vocal/Squier Strat/MIDI drum parts in CE5. Everything goes so much more smoothly when the PC decides to behave itself - just sayin'...

The track is ready to mix/master and it's HUGE!!!. You're going to love it - or absolutely hate it...;-).

The track bears a very passing resemblance to this...

As for the other tracks, I've had to make a few executive decisions. I'm kinda running out of time and I have a lot of tracks to work on.The next few months could be a little difficult what with business travel, holidays and such, so I have to be realistic about what I can achieve.

So here goes...

  • MARE NOSTRUM - I will record choral vocal parts for this track next week - definitely. I have a "window" which I plan to exploit to the full, and this track is window-shaped...
  • FCA BOOTS - I'm not going to bother with vocals on this - just go straight to mix/master stage
  • TROPES AND MEMES - ditto
  • EVERYBODY CALLS ME DARREN - I'm going to abandon this track. It's a silly idea that doesn't actually add any value to the album. In fact, possibly quite the reverse..
So that leaves me with three tracks to work on over the next month. I plan to release an EP at some stage in June, so I will concentrate on the tracks for that initially. Stay tooned for further news...

Never Had It To Lose It - 290115

Sponsored by "Neil Young etc."

Mixed/mastered the track in CE5/AA3.

Had a lot of "fun" trying to get the Ric bass parts and the drum parts to sit well together. Much faffing about with EQs and the like, but got there eventually. One or two little edits required for the Squier Strat parts also.

The track sounds fine, but I'm still not sure about its place on the album - it feels more like an EP track at this stage, but we'll see when all the other tracks are done.

More work tomorrow.

Floaty Floaty - 060115

FLOATY FLOATY features on the new WE ARE ALL GHOSTS compilation "...ENDING THE YEAR ON A HIGH 2014", which you can download from Bandcamp. All proceeds from the sale of the album will be donated to Hospice UK.

Not sure what implications this will have for the track. I may leave it as being exclusive to the album, or I may include it in an EP. I'll have to bend my brain about this issue for a while. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the track...;-).

Never Had It To Lose It - 060115

Sponsored by "Magazine".

Dubbed-up the track in CE5. Much clearing-out of "muck", which wasn't easy, but I persisted with it, and the track sounds a lot better now than when I started working on it. Mixing/mastering should be challenging in terms of sorting out frequencies and that...

Not sure if this is going to make it on the album. Halfway through this session, EP obscurity seemed to be the track's fate, but now I'm not so convinced of that. Nice problem to have, I suppose.

The real world intervenes tomorrow and then I'm off on my travels all next week, so I'll see how much more I can do this month. Good progress so far...

djp

Accents - 030115

Sponsored by "Last Played 2014".

Programmed dub delays on the vocal and percussion parts in CE5. Much trial and error and back and forth, but the track sounds in pretty good shape now.

I have an issue with trailing decays on some of the VST plugin synths, but I'll sort that by tracking them to audio and fading them out at the appropriate time. That'll be on Monday, as I have a mini roadtrip tomorrow.

Because of the source material for the vocal parts (sampled 78s), I reckon I'm going to put this as a hidden bonus track on the Bandcamp download, which means it won't be available on the CD Baby/iTunes/whatever version of the album. So you'll know where to go when you want to download the album, eh?

Regards,

djp

D(O)UB(T) status report

So, I've reached the New Year, which is always a crucial time in my view when considering the progress (and general "health") of an album project. Whatever is in good nick at the turn of the year gets worked on to completion - whatever isn't in good shape gets dropped.

So, what's the story with D(O)UB(T), then?

According to the spreadsheet that I've used to log progress on the album, I've started work on a total of 28 tracks. That's way too much for an album. I have no idea of what the current total running time would be for those tracks, but I'd say we're talking north of 90 mins. So, in reality, I have plenty of tracks to spare for inclusion as non-album tracks in a number of promotional EPs. At this stage, there will be at least two EPs - possibly even three. I may also keep a few tracks back for inclusion on netlabel submissions, should I be asked for material.

Still, 28 tracks, eh? What's the story with them?

A total of 8 tracks have been mixed and mastered and are considered complete. These are mostly, but not exclusively, ambient/experimental electronic tracks. The really good tracks will feature on the album - I plan to sequence tracks in triplets - fast/slow/ambient-y - lather/rinse/repeat. Those that aren't quite up to snuff will feature ether as EPs tracks or compilation tracks.

The tracks in question are:-

  • A ACCIDENT
  • A PLAGUE ON BOTH MY HOUSES
  • COMPLICATIONS FROM A FALL
  • I AM A SHADOW OF YOUR FORMER SELF
  • THE BOOK OF PASSWORDS
  • THE NEW NUMBER TWO
  • WATCHING THE NEWS WITH THE SOUND OFF
  • FLOATY FLOATY
I need to "dub-up" 4 tracks. By "dub-up", I mean I need to program/automate various dub effects. Once that has been done, the tracks will be ready to mix/master

These tracks are:-

  • ACCENTS
  • HELICOPTER SHOTS OF THE CITY
  • NEVER HAD IT TO LOSE IT
  • UNWINNABLE CAPTION COMPETITION
ACCENTS will probably feature on an EP, but the others should make the album. We'll see... I'll start work on these tracks over the next few days and I hope to have them finished by the end of this month, taking account of a lengthy roadtrip I have planned in a few weeks time.

The remainder of the tracks need a bit more work, including (variously) writing and recording lyrics/vocals, tracking some additional audio and the almost-inevitable "dub-up". One or two of the tracks will probably not make the album, but should feature elsewhere.

These tracks are:-

  • CHOKING ON DRY BREAD
  • ME AND THE FLY
  • EVERYBODY CALLS ME DARREN
  • FCA BOOTS
  • I CAN EXPLAIN...EVERYTHING
  • I CHOOSE INDECISION
  • IS EVERYBODY HAPPY YET?
  • IYE
  • MARE NOSTRUM
  • MY TROUBLES ARE AS NOTHING COMPARED TO YOURS
  • STILTWALKER IN THE WIND
  • THIS IS GOING TO TAKE, LIKE, FOREVER
  • TROPES AND MEMES
  • YOU HAVE MY HEART SCALDED
  • YOU'LL NEVER MISS YOUR MOTHER TILL THE WELL RUNS DRY
  • GOMORRAH
(Phew - that makes 28 tracks in total - I can count...).

So, on that basis, I have 20 tracks to finish between now and the summer. As I said above, I'll do the "dub-up" tracks first, and then I'll work on ME AND THE FLY, which will be the lead track on the first EP. The track itself won't feature on the album, but the dub version of it, CHOKING ON DRY BREAD, will.

I have set myself a bit of a challenge, but it's all very do-able within the timescale.

In relation to which tracks actually make the final cut, I am conscious of the fact that some tracks may be very similar to each other. I certainly don't want to feature two such tracks in close proximity to each other, and the plan is that one would go on the album and the other would go on an EP or compilation.

I'd better get cracking on this so...;-).

Regards,

djp
